Extended, RED BAND Trailer For ‘As Above, So Below’ Has Bloody New Footage (Possible Spoilers)

We say “possible spoilers” because this extra-long, final trailer has so much action (not to mention blood) that we are actually kind of concerned–especially because we watched it– that they don’t hold much back for the actual movie. Since the trailer is not on You Tube as of this writing, we have a link to it on Yahoo! Movies. You have been warned… oh, and it made us want to drive directly to the nearest movie theater showing it and see it ASAP. Consider yourself warned–watch at your own risk!

So! Does it make you want to bolt out and catch the movie right away, or are you concerned there’s too many scares given away in the trailer? We haven’t dug deeply to ask someone if this new trailer kinda shoots As Above, So Below ‘s load, but we will find out and report back to you. Oh, and screencaps are coming!

I'm pretty sure you couldn't see in the green band trailer that she was holding what appears to be a dead infant...

Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno – Horror Boom Hunted Down Ten Trivia Tidbits To Whet Your Appetite

The movie isn’t opening for months, but we’re scouring the internet for new information several times a week. You may have heard some of these pieces of trivia (including some spoiler-ish, but you’ve got to click here to go to our Spoiler-A-Rama page to read them, so don’t worry about having surprises ruined), but we bet you haven’t heard them all – unless, of course, you were lucky enough to attend a film festival screening …or you’re as psyched up and obsessed with Eli Roth’s upcoming cannibal shocker as we are!

Screen shot 2014-06-03 at 5.01.03 AM

1. Eli Roth announced at the world premiere that a sequel titled Beyond the Green Inferno is officially in the works. The second film will not be directed by Roth, but by Nicholas López (Aftershock)

2. The title The Green Inferno is a reference to the name of a (fictional) 16mm film-within-a film in Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust; it is also one of the alternate (but rarely used) titles of Cannibal Holocaust 2.

3.  The beautiful lead actress (actually, we’re pretty sure all the actresses in the film who play the hapless student activists are beautiful before the horrible plan crash)  in The Green Inferno,  Lorenza Izzo, also had the lead in Aftershock* (2013).

No, Eli Roth isn't IN the Green Inferno, it's Photoshopped (but still funny)

No, Eli Roth isn’t IN the Green Inferno, it’s Photoshopped (but still funny)

4. Lorenzo Izzo not only sells the hell out of her screen time, she’s a real trooper. Eli Roth said in an interview on IGN.com that she got “devoured by bugs…You’d wake up and mosquitos and ants had bitten your face. [We had to]  sleep completely covered from head-to-toe or you’d get devoured.”

5.  Eli Roth wanted the location to be as authentic as possible. When in Peru scouting locations during pre-production (in summer, for Godssake), they travelled the river until they found a village so far, far off the grid that it had no electricity, no running water, and the villagers lived in grass huts. Though the travel time to and from the set was grueling–Roth says the cast and crew would get up at 4:45 AM, lugged their equipment into Land Rovers, then boats, then up the river, then lugged everything into the village–Roth says he picked that village to shoot in because it truly looked like it was from another time.

6. The practical effects and make-up were done by Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, AKA KNB EFX,  AKA the best, as far as we’re concerned. Even some of the mixed reviews we’ve read–the kind where you can tell a couple sentences in that the reviewer is not especially fond of horror movies– grudgingly give Nicotero and Co. their props, admitting the gore effects were flawless, realistic, and top-notch. For many of these reviewers, it seemed like these scenes were their favorite parts of the movie.

7.   Roth says that to get permission to film in the village, they film-makers had to explain to the village what a movie was, because they didn’t know and didn’t speak English, but a language called “Quechua”. He chose to get a generator and a TV out to them and show them Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust.  The villagers reaction? “[They] thought it was a comedy …the funniest thing that they’d ever seen** …they wanted to play cannibals in the movie. So we had the entire village acting in the film.” (Source: IGN)

8. Eli Roth has made it very clear whenever discussing TGI that his main inspiration was Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust, and that this movie never would have been made if it were not for Holocaust and the other movies in the genre. In this case, Roth goes above and beyond his devotion to this genre than simply pointing this out in the media. During the end credits, he goes out of his way to honor the films that inspired TGI;  he actually lists all of the films from the cannibal subgenre, complete with all of the titles they were released under and all the various aliases used by the Italian filmmakers [Source: Drew McWeeny, Hitflix.com].

9. The average temperature during the shoot was 110 degrees. …in the shade.

10. Though Eli Roth cannot praise Cannibal Holocaust enough, he says he abhors violence to animals (and in CH, at least seven animals are murdered on-screen, which he does not condone (though he hasn’t gone out of his away to speak out against it, either,  which we wish he would).  Roth has been an animal rights supporter and PETA spokesperson for years –  see below.

So, no animals were harmed in the making of a grindhouse cannibal movie filmed on location -for once.

Finally, we have some Green Inferno SPOILERS! Instead of putting them in this article, where someone might stumble upon the in error, we chose to put them here on the Spoiler-A-Rama page. Click here for the spoilers... ironically, most of them were just smack-dab in the middle of mainstream reviews, no warnings, nothing.

*To this day, I don’t understand all the hate by critics and viewers for Aftershock. I went in with low expectations after seeing the 5/10 star ratings on the IMDB and some brutal reviews, but from the time the earthquake hit (yes, we shouldn’t have had to sit through 40 minutes of borderline-mumblecore character development) until the gut-punch of the final shot,  I was actively frightened, shocked by almost everything that went as horribly wrong as possible, several startlingly effective moments clearly thrown in for the horror fans, and, pardon the pun, shook up. Uneven? Fair enough. Deeper meanings? Not so much. Entertaining? Absolutely.

**This is where we’d quietly back off, get a hold of our travel agent, and arrange to book a flight home ASAP.

‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto On Carcosa, Hideous Men, And The Season One Endgame

I’d love to write about this show, but I usually have to watch each episode twice. Also, my brain seems to hibernate along with the rest of me during the winter, and I’ve read some thesis-like essays about the complexities of the show (many written by highly esteemed, published writers) that blow me away with their elaborate interpretations and theories. I’ll attach links to some of them later–I’m also woman enough to admit at least one of them is over my head– but for now, here’s an intelligent interview with the creator of the amazing HBO series, Nic Pizzolatto (he also wrote the scripts for all eight episodes that comprise this season, which is very rare and puts viewers and critics alike in a state of awe). There are some slight spoilers from past episodes, including last Sunday’s “Haunted Houses”, and he discussed when certain information will be disclosed, but there’s no major spoilers, other than the one about Rusty and Marty turning out to both be the same person, and the one who killed Dora Lange. Oops, I guess I should have said spoiler alert, retroactive! But seriously, if you want to say totally clean, I will give this SPOILER ALERT warning.

New American Horror Story Coven Poll – What Cliffhanger Resolution Are You Dying To Find Out?

January 12th Update:

Thanks to all who took the poll, yo! These are FUN. We purposely put an option for “other”, and it got two votes this time, but alas, those who chose it forgot to add their own answer! Feel free, some of the previous answers are pretty funny (sometimes I also wish the writers could see the ideas) and no-one can see who you are. I’m the official Administrator slash Headmistress Webmistress for AHS and related material, and even if I took pains researching it, the poll will NOT tell me who you are. Keep voting, as we get down to the last 3 episodes, we’ll keep the polls–and maybe a survey–going (there’ll even be a couple of post-finale ones; vote for your favorite bitchy comment, most hated character, scariest character, most shocking moment… you get the idea).

Screen shot 2014-01-11 at 1.24.09 AM

So! American Horror Story Coven will be back on in less than 48 hours*  (this’ll be Episode Ten, “The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks”–guess who guest-stars as herself) and we were all left with some serious “burning questions” we want to see answered after “Head” aired on December 11th. Tell us which one (or two) of them you’ve been waiting for the most over the show’s weeks-long holiday “hiatus” to find out!

*and I have written exactly ZERO of my “Ten Things We Learned” for the missing, what, four or so episodes I’m behind by.  Sorry, things got kind of wacky over the holidays. Tree’s down now, things are almost back to normal, I’ll see what I can do… as always, thanks for your patience.

‘American Horror Story’: Ryan Murphy on the latest ‘Coven’ and plans for season 4 — EXCLUSIVE

EW.com: So this is not the last we’ve seen of Myrtle?

Ryan Murphy: Oh God, never! I love the shot of Misty approaching and Myrtle’s blue eyes opening up. Myrtle has to have vengeance on that Fiona. She is the one of all of them who is the most invested in saving that coven and doing the right thing, so she comes back in a major way. But she was very strict and by the book and I think after being burnt at the stake, it does sort of make you be sort of be like, “You know what about the rules? F— it. I’m gonna do what I wanna do.” So we will see a quite unhinged, dangerous Myrtle. Fiona is just making enemies at every turn. So that is all building to a head.

-From the EW.com piece by Tim Stack-don’t miss it!

‘The Writers’ Room’: ‘American Horror Story’ producers on the return of horror to TV — EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

I hadn’t heard AHS was going to be covered! We’ll be checking it out On Demand after midnight. YES.

‘A Field In England,’ ‘Witching & Bitching,’ and organ trafficking doc to screen at Fantastic Fest

Here’s some notable and recent additions to Fantastic Fest 2013.  We weren’t sure we could describe A Field In England (by the director of Kill List and Sightseers,Ben Wheatley) as horror (or even what sub-category under our ‘Cross-Genre’ category to put it under, we settled for a few); watch the trailer and you’ll see what we mean. The poster art is pretty damn cool though, we’ll give it that. Of all three, the David Cronenberg -narrated documentary Tales From the Organ Trade should be the most horrifying and disturbing …and we’re pretty sure we’re not alone in our opinion.  Alex de la Iglesia‘s Witching and Bitching sounds like the most entertaining of these (and that title helps it hit the ground running); check the Related Articles below for the trailer.

Reviews – The Spellbook of Marie Laveau: The Petit Albert, A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau

OK, to be honest, at this point I know more about the song “Marie Laveau” and the New Orléans voodoo shop (and finding a women’s t-shirt from it to wear) than I do about the actual woman. Until I can write a well-researched piece, here’s an excellent piece with two book reviews, and this piece is written by an expert, Dan Harms. It also contains a ton of helpful links.

Papers Falling from an Attic Window

I got back last week from a trip to the grimoires conference that also took me through Austin and New Orleans.  At the latter, I picked up a copy of Carolyn Long’s biography A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau.  That reminded me that I hadn’t finished reading The Spellbook of Marie Laveau: The Petit Albert recently released by Hadean Press, so I finished up both.

When the Spellbook was announced, I was skeptical of the claims that this book had any real ties to Marie Laveau.  Having read it now, I can say that was completely justified.  It is true that the Petit Albert has turned up in discussions of the New Orleans occult scene, but the book provides little proof of any connection to Marie Laveau or New Orleans Voudou.  (If it’s any indication of the attitude in the Crescent City itself…

American Horror Story: Coven: Fresh Spoilers on the Feminism-Focused Third Chapter

Yep, they’re in production and WE CAN’T WAIT! American Horror Story: Coven will premiere on October 19th on FX… let the countdown begin!

‘American Horror Story: Coven’ scoop: Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson play [spoiler]!

Angela Bassett as a Voodoo Lady named Marie Laveau (another man dead and gone*)! Kathy Bates as Delphine LaLaurie, one of the cruelest bitches of all time – we wrote a piece back in March making an estimated guess LaLaurie would be the “real life woman” Ryan Murphy had revealed at the time Bates would portray- read the piece and about her here (but the details of her blood-curdling crimes are not for the squeamish, so there’s a separate link in the post itself if you want to read the really gruesome stuff). We’re still patting ourselves on the back for calling it; we’re also guessing that the Bates storyline will be the least “fun and campier-toned” of Season 3 of American Horror Story. We’re positive about one thing, though: We! Can’t! WAIT!
*according to the lyrics to the song of the same name. Plus, she “lived in a swamp in a hollow log/ with a one-eyed snake and a 3-legged dog/ bare bony body and-a-stringy hair/ if she ever see’d your face ’round there, she’d go (Scream) another man dead and gone.” Oh, and also: “if she ever asks you to make her a wife, then you best stick with her for the rest of her life, or it’ll be (Scream) another man dead and gone”! We’ll add more actual details on the voodoo priestess NOT based on the lyrics of a song soon. Plus maybe a mp3 of the song. We doubt LaLaurie had any upbeat, catchy-ass songs written about her.
