HEY! Ten American Horror Story Freak Show Plot/Character Details That Have Recently Hit The News!

OK, we’re going to go with bullet points.  If last season’s “Coven” wasn’t exactly your favorite season (ahem), things may be looking up.

Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 9.17.52 AM

Ryan Murphy has said that he wanted a “comedic tone” similar to Coven, but that this season is just getting darker, and it’s going to not be so much in the tone of Coven, but closer to the tone of Asylum! Hey, nightmare time from AHS again!

  • Let’s get the bad news out of the way now: There is a 99% chance that Lilly Rabe will not be able to join the cast, as she has a scheduling conflict. Let’s cross our fingers she can at least show up for a cameo.
  • Vic Mackey Michael Chiklis will be playing the circus/freak show strongman (that’s pretty much how they looked back in the day, built like bulldogs rather than beefcake).
  • His character will be married to Angela Bassett’s character. Ryan Murphy described the character as the strong but sensitive type, who “is written to be quite vulnerable”.
  • Kathy Bates will play his ex-wife, and they’ll all have plenty of scenes together… which is great, since Bassett VS. Bates = pure gold. Chiklis will just be the icing on the cake!
  • Sarah Paulson will not be playing a character with two heads, but one with a conjoined twin. If you’ve seen photos of people born with a live, conjoined twin, this has the high possibility to become really, really disturbing.*

  • The production will start shooting S4 in the middle of July. Kathy Bates says she’s starting to have costume fittings, and her character will appear in the portions of the show that take place in the late 1950s.
  • In a recent E! Online Spoiler chat, we found out about three new characters currently being cast: “that of the comedic ‘Larry’, ‘Bobby’, an extremely, extremely tall man described as a gentle giant,  and ‘Sammy’, a role which will require prosthetics.” Yikes…
  • Evan Peters will be playing an as-yet unspecified ‘freak’, whom Jessica Lange’s character has ‘rescued’. Oh, and her character refers to them as “unusuals”,  since let’s face it, no-one likes to be called a freak (even if they are employed in a Freak Show).
  • Denis O’Hare will return as “a collector of freaks,” according to Vulture. Of his relationship with Lange’s character, he hinted, “We’ll have lots of scenes with each other, but we’ll be battling.” We’re really glad he’s going to play a live character with a tongue this time around.
  • Actors that are definitely “in”, but don’t have specified roles as of yet: Frances Conroy (yes!), Emma Roberts, Jamie Brewer, and Gabourey Sidibe.

It’s “unusual” that Angela Bassett appears to be aging in reverse!

We have been told that the “big bad”- -glad they have one this season– will be someone (or something) called “The Clown Killer”. What we don’t know yet is if he is a clown that kills people, a killer who targets clowns, or possible a clown who only kills other clowns.

From the Paleyfeat 2014 panel.

*When I was young, I want to say…pffft…maybe 5th grade, my parents let me check out a book from the library titled “Freaks” that was in fact very sympathetic and compassionate. A little too informative for me at that particular age, though. I read about a man (who did work in a freak show) with a conjoined twin that had a head and an arm that hung there limply. The head would sometimes go to sleep and wake up, and it snored. The final sentence has been seared into my brain for decades: “When the head began talking, however, he committed suicide with a shotgun.”  I assumed back then (and still have the strong feeling) that it wasn’t the fact that the head was talking that drove him to kill himself but what the head was saying.

Paleyfest 2014: Ryan Murphy Lauds ‘American Horror Story Coven’ Cast as “Most Amazing Group of Women Ever on TV”

Featured photo above: Ryan Murphy (left) laughing in our faces when we asked him how any suspense or dramatic stakes can be maintained if any character killed off can be brought back to life and/or patched back together whimsically,* including a decapitated main character with one hand being put back together offscreen, which is barely mentioned other than a throwaway line.  Meanwhile, Kathy Bates (middle)  and a woman who appears to be a young, strangely friendly Naomi Campbell Angela Bassett (right) are good sports and laugh at how much fun they had playing fictional versions of Delphine LaLaurie and Marie Laveau while wiping the floor with certain younger cast members –without even trying –no matter how goofy or nonsensical their plot-lines got.

Okay, uh, moving on a bit, to the Paleyfest 2014 panel that actually took place…

Myrtleshowcocktail.jpg

It is our firm hope that whoever she is cast as (in American Horror Story -Freak Show), Frances Conroy still has as much of a blast playing as she clearly did when she played Myrtle Snow.

Well, Coven started OUT feminist, anyway… the women in American Horror Story Asylum went through way more pain, suffering, and heartbreak–mostly at the hands of men–but we thought that all in all (other than poor, wretched Chloë Sevigne’s character Shelly, whose fate was so horrible that several fellow female friends of mine said was the reason they decided not to watch the rest of Asylum as it was “too disturbing” for them, and actually gave me a rare nightmare or two) the women in the show prevailed. However, that’s another article.  Plus, the Coven cast really did kick ass. Click “View original” in the lower left to read the entire Paleyfest article… and check out the beautiful Ms. Angela Bassett (and friend), looking thirty-five tops, not fifty-five, below (and not looking too bad in the featured image, either)! Let’s hope she gets to have just as much fun on “Freak Show”, which will premiere in October 2014.

*including a decapitated main character with one hand being put back together offscreen, which is barely fucking mentioned other than a throwaway line because, you know, witches …then telling us “Don’t be a hater, dear,” when we express valid disappointment in the last 1/3 of the season or ask for clarification on plot holes we could drive a frat party bus through, and then laughing heartily while patting himself on the back at his own clever reference to a line of dialogue on the show.  Later, Murphy howled with laughter when asked to define the term feminism, then  soon after composed himself and changed the subject when another audience member pointed out that feminism is comprised of more than women characters deciding to use the majority of their time and supernatural powers by hurling physical abuse, bitchiness, and actual intentional slaughter at other women on the show, rather than having man-on-woman violence.  Wow, I would have no problem writing a fictional version of the entire panel like this, but hopefully I got it out of my system for now.

Also, in the interest of honesty and full disclosure, I freely admit that I would have KILLED to be an audience member at that panel, no matter how much of a let-down the back half of “Coven” was (I’d only kill if the seats were really good, though).

This Week’s Cover: Behind the scenes at ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ — it’s magically delicious!

I do recommend the issue for lots of fun content and interviews with the three cover models here, but HEADS UP! The piece plays kind of fast and loose when it comes to spoilers (the cover itself is one big hint that they go into detail over; kind of late for a warning there).. Worse yet, we find out that there are only twelve episodes this season! Seven down, five to go. If you can’t stand not to read the cover story (we don’t blame you, too many goodies) but are wary of spoilers, skip the page on “The Horrors Ahead” – which lists ten upcoming story points. I suggest just folding the page over on itself and reading around it for a good compromise. Apparently, the season also won’t be a wrap until January, which means we’ve got something to ease any post-holiday depression!

‘American Horror Story’: Ryan Murphy on the latest ‘Coven’ and what’s next for Madame LaLaurie — EXCLUSIVE

“Beautiful.”

Not thrilled we won’t have a new American Horror Story Coven episode for two goddamned weeks (one week is already too long to have to wait), though hopefully I can get caught up on the episode write-ups and then hit the ground running, since this plot –multiple plots, actually– is moving along quite speedily. But check this Entertainment Weekly Exclusive interview with Ryan Murphy out to see what’s ahead, and since we have a subscription, we can’t WAIT to see the AHSC cover story show up in the mail on Friday!

New American Horror Story Coven Poll – Who Do You Think Will Be The New Supreme? Vote Now!

Ryan Murphy has stated that we won’t find out who the new Supreme is until January, when the last couple of episodes–or maybe even the Coven finale–air. Lots of guesses are floating around. Strangely, I see a few up-to-date polls that list Madsion (just a couple percentages away) equal to Zoe, and much over Misty Day. Let’s find out what you fellow fans of American Horror Story Coven have to say. Oh, and you can vote twice. I’ll be keeping this poll open for several weeks, or until we officially find out. You can vote more than once, because with every episode, we get more clues, reveals, and misdirections that might make you change your vote. Dig in-and don’t be shy with your write-in votes, either!

Take The First American Horror Story Coven Poll, We Wanna Know What You Think!

UPDATE: Welp, most of you guys were right on the money! It was  indeed Ms. Snow. On American Horror Story Coven, though, being burned at the stake doesn’t always equal dead… not if Misty Day is around! Good call, everyone.

Screen shot 2013-11-08 at 1.37.49 AM

This one should have gone up a couple of days ago due to the fact the episode we’re asking your opinion/prediction on will have aired 24 hours from now. So, now’s your chance to make a call on this one. You stay anonymous. Hell, you can not only vote more than once (not that we’re asking you to), you can pick two answers if you’ve got it narrowed down to either/or. Oh, and you can choose ‘other’ and write in your own vote/theory …we encourage you making your own case!

Now! So, in the preview for “Burn Witch Burn,” we see that a witch (or at least we assume it is one) is indeed burned at the stake. We know it can’t be Fiona, since she apparently starts the fire with flair by tossing her cig at it. Later in the preview we see her turn and stalk away. So if it’s not Jessica Lange, as Fiona, who do you think it’ll be?

We’ll know in less than 24 hours who does get burned, but no reason not to vote up until you see the episode. Also, you’ll be able to yell out “CALLED IT!” when you see it on air.

‘American Horror Story’: Ryan Murphy on the latest ‘Coven’ and ‘the most shocking thing we’ve ever done’ — EXCLUSIVE

MAN, the American Horror Story team really steps up their game for Halloween! Plus, next week is part two… and I’ve got a pretty good idea of who gets burned at the stake!

Oh “torture porn” our ass, Brian Lowry. Sounds to us like American Horror Story Coven just hits the ground running. We’ll be able to judge for ourselves soon enough!

‘American Horror Story’: Ryan Murphy on why ‘Coven’ is the best season

Like Ryan Murphy really needs to sell us on this, right? You had us at ‘American Horror Story Coven,’ dude!  Less than 48 hours left!

DO NOT Miss This New American Horror Story Coven Trailer! LaLaurie Horrors VS. Marie Leveau – IT’S ON!

We were wondering (and dreading) when the American Horror Story Coven teasers (besides ‘Pins and Needles’, one of the earliest) would show or even hint at the horrors Delphine La Laurie (Kathy Bates) was capable of. We also wanted to see more of Angela Basset as Marie Leveau. Here in this “Mythology” trailer, we get both…

It also looks like Lily Rabe‘s character might not make it past the pilot, witch which would explain why her name is not on any of the posters (color us seriously bummed).

Screen shot 2013-10-06 at 3.37.30 AM

The spot starts off with these shots of Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange), in an especially beautiful and striking shot:

"There's a storm coming..."

“There’s a storm coming…”

Then LaLaurie  entering her personally-created chamber of horrors (and yes, that’s blood smeared on her face in the promo; slave’s blood as a beauty cream), holding a candle and looking full of rapture…

Screen shot 2013-10-06 at 3.40.59 AM

Which is much more disturbing that an evil look, when you get glimpses of what sights have her so joyous…

Screen shot 2013-10-06 at 3.25.41 AM

Pretty sure which LaLaurie victim this is by looking at the claw-like hand, but we’re not comfortable describing that particular event/torture

Pretty sure that's her doctor husband beside her, who helped out when it came to more technical things like breaking and re-forming the limbs of her victims into grotesque shapes, and you know what, that's enough speculation on that subject for now

Pretty sure that’s her doctor husband beside her, who helped out when it came to more technical things like breaking and re-forming the limbs of her victims into grotesque shapes, and you know what, that’s enough speculation on that subject for now

There’s some shots of ugly fundamentalist, hateful religious nuts that wouldn’t be out-of-place in the True Blood opening credit sequence. We also see Leveau looking ready to unleash her wrath, with Angela Basset looking beautiful and seething:

Screen shot 2013-10-06 at 3.39.41 AM

Followed by an awesome closing shot (that just puts the icing on the fucking bad-ass cake*) of a swamp alligator snapping its jaws around what looks like the entire upper half of a man and dragging him speedily into the water.

Screen shot 2013-10-06 at 3.38.00 AM

He probably deserved it.

BAM! TITLE CARDS! Hot Damn! Less than a week till the premiere, “Bitchcraft”, On October 9th! Who else gets a big adrenaline surge just thinking about that?  Oh YES!

KICK SOME ASS, MARIE!

KICK SOME ASS, MARIE!

Here’s the PR synopsis/pitch again for American Horror Story Coven from FX:

Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

So, looks like it must be The Season of the Witch for American Horror Story this year, huh? (See what we did ther–Ow! Hey, who threw that?)

*It took SERIOUS self-restraint to only use the word ‘fuck’ once in this piece. Oops, that’s twice, guess we bumped this to an R-rating now. Hell!
