‘Walking Dead’: Melissa McBride talks about the ‘metamorphosis’ of Carol

SPOILER ALERT (for S3 of The Walking Dead AND the prison episodes of the graphic novel)

So far, they’re keeping VERY quiet about if we’ll see Carol again. I hope we do; Melissa McBride has said she had to talk Kirkman not once, but twice out of killing her off. McBride said in the Rolling Stone TWD cover story last month (we get the print version) that one of the times, it was because the original plan during the “Killer Within” episode was for her, not T-Dawg, to be the unexpected fast death before the bigger death of Laurie during childbirth (I guess ‘dying during childbirth’ is a tactful way of putting it).  Even if we never see her again (though I think we will… hopefully not in the same 1-mile radius about Tyrese, if Rick tells him, or she’s as dead as a walker) I will give them points for not having a character leave the show by being killed off in a sudden way that involves pools of blood (which is why I think she’ll show up down the road somewhere).

Speaking of that, do you want to know what happens to the character of Carol in The Walking Dead graphic novels? If you’re planning on reading them, or are and the lengthy prison arc is still in the early stages, STOP NOW, because it’s pretty shocking. Keep in mind Carol in the comics looks more like Andrea and didn’t lose a kid (I think) or have an abusive husband.

→SPOILER ALERT! THE WALKING DEAD GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOILER ALERT!←

Gonna try not to make this a giant run-on paragraph here, and the backstory is complicated, so here’s why/how Carol in TWD comic dies: She has a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with Tyrese (hey, he’d be the first man I’d try to hook up with in the comics too) and they share a cell. Michonne shows up and is alone together in the gym with Tyrese; she comes on to him and they have sex. Carol, who was already feeling kind of lonely and off-kilter from all the horrible shit she and the group have lived through, either catches them or finds out, and cuts her wrists in their cell. The group find her in time–Tyrese feels terrible and guilty about it, and Michonne’s not exactly proud of it either–and save her life. Lori starts hanging out more with Carol since she knows Carol could really use some friendly support. Carol surprises the hell out of Lori by hinting around about “sharing” Rick between them sexually, and tries to kiss Lori. Lori tries to let her down easy, but worries about Carol’s mental health. Carol feels rejected. Not long after, poor Carol finally goes completely batshit and goes for a stroll outside. She approaches what appears to be a female walker (I say ‘appears” because it’s pretty rotten, missing chunks, etc.) who is chained up and kept around so that his scent will throw off other zombies from the humans living there) and starts talking to her like she’s human, telling her about how she doesn’t have any real friends, the prison isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, she’s lonely, etc. In one of the most disturbing scenes in the series (which sets the ‘disturbing’ bar pretty high) she strolls right up to it calmly, puts her arms around the zombie and asks if it likes her. The zombie bites her throat and she winces and says “I knew you liked me…”  as it tears in and rips out a big bite. The disturbing part is the look on her face, she looks happy but with her mind totally gone as she smiles and blood sprays everywhere. People in the group come running over as she collapses and bleeds out –Tyrese especially is in serious shock– and when they try to carry her inside, she gurgles to them to let her die (and dies). Of course, they’re still processing what the fuck just happened when she turns, sits up, and lunges for Tyrese- someone in the group reacts quickly and shoots her in the head.  So there you have it, suicide by zombie. Poor Sophie gets ‘adopted’ by Maggie and Glen.  It’s definitely not the most fucked-up thing that goes down in the prison era; most of the really disturbing things could NEVER be depicted on AMC. If they tried to re-create them for the series, it’d have to be so dimly lit and watered down that you wouldn’t even be able to tell what the hell is going on; there’s no way to do a TV version of them (that would get past the network and make it to air, anyway).

(END OF SPOILERS)

But I digress. Anyway, she (so far) has a slightly happier existence in her AMC TWD incarnation. I think another character–maybe not a prison resident– may end up snapping and commit suicide in a similar manner.  Kirkman and Scott Gimple have both stated they want to use events from the comic, but switch around characters and tweak the situations.  For instance, in the comics, Dale lived and it was him, not Herschel (who is not a even-tempered as he is on the show) who got ankle-bit suddenly by a zombie in a dark location and his leg amputated. Dale sticks around way, way longer than in the series… and Andrea hooks up with Dale (Daddy issues? His character repeatedly says he has no idea why Andrea would want to be his girlfriend, but oh well, he’s not going to complain). Kind of relieved we didn’t have to see that depicted on the show–the comic will suffice.

This Just In- AMC Releases Pics/Video Of Alternate, Gorier Final Milton VS. Andrea Scene From The Walking Dead Season Three Finale (SPOILERS)

Spoiler Alert If You Have Not Seen Welcome TO The Tombs, AKA The Walking Dead Season Three Finale Yet And Plan To …Last Warning!

No, Dude, Seriously! Just stay off the internet unless it’s an emergency until you watch the episode; it’s not only here but plastered everywhere online!

This alternate version would have been too brutal and taken away the suspense in the last act of “Welcome To The Tombs.” We agree they went the right way, since the reveal was much more effective. Not thrilled that it happened, but the suspense of not knowing Andrea‘s fate until Rick, Michonne, Tyreese and Daryl did was one of the few things the finale did right. Who would have killed Milton? Would she still have been able to take herself out? Maybe they would have integrated it with a scene of the rescue team kicking the door open exactly a split-second too late, then have been greeted with the sight you see in the “featured image” above, quickly blew his brains out, and held Andrea as she died? That would have taken away her kill, not to mention– OK, let’s back up a little…

Here’s the link to the Comicbook.com blog that first caught our eye about the alternate ending.

Below are a sample or two;  AMC owns all the copyrights. Click on the below photo (or use this link) to go to the AMC featurette that spills the info in the first place…  and this writer actually felt very unsettled after watching this particular “Inside the Episode” –for one, Andrea’s raw, primal scream of pain and terror caused hairs on the back of my neck to rise in a chill– so for what it’s worth…  heads up.

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 3.40.39 AM

Oh, and about the photos, two things: First, EEK, that doesn’t look like her neck he’s biting into (though maybe the Andrea-haters would have loved to see it) and wouldn’t he go for the exposed part of her neck instead of deciding to start by gnawing his way through what looks to be a leather coat? You don’t see Walkers bite through clothing very much. In fact, I can’t remember a time when they bit something other than exposed flesh. Also, Milton lost his glasses before he even got stabbed. What, did he turn and then feel around, find his glasses, and put them back on?  In the on-air version, the glasses weren’t even there when the episode began.

The more we think about it, the more we realize what a shitty version of the scene this would have been. Terrible idea. Wonder who made the call on using the more suspenseful, subtle version? Good call, whoever you are.

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 4.14.15 AM

Fuck!

Another great reason to go the less in-your-face route: how did he decompose so fast in literally less than 3 minutes? I know poor Milton bled out, but come on–do someone’s teeth go from white and healthy to yellow and rotted-looking the instant they turn? Yes, it is more showy, but so distractingly inconsistent with others that turned to walkers so fast we would have been pulled  at least some viewers out of the episode (not that we were super-invested in the first place). Merle got rotten really fast too, but the scene was so emotional and perfectly acted we forgave it.  The zombie-fied version we saw of Milton in the aired version was actually much scarier, and more subtle, and we could focus on the scene (though I feel bad for Dallas Roberts having to go through the 3-4 hours in the make-up chair–including those contacts– to have no-one see the result anywhere but in a “behind the scenes” feature).

I know how the safety works.
Well, I’m not going anywhere.
I tried.
You did …you did.

Do you think they picked the right version to air? Feel free to sound off…

‘The Walking Dead’: Andrea, Milton Discuss The Season Three Finale Shocker (SPOILERS)!

“Do I wish we could’ve seen and explored more of the comic-book-Robert-Kirkman Andrea? Yes. Absolutely,” Holden told TVLine. “Do I wish that I had more scenes with Michonne, showing that friendship? Yes. Absolutely. But at the end of the day, I don’t think I could ask for a better death. I feel like her life mattered, and she died trying, and her heart was in the right place. I feel grateful for that. You can’t have it all.”

Watch ‘The Walking Dead’ Super Bowl Ad Spot + Five Promos For Mid-season Return (The Global Dispatch)

So, we get to see Merle VS. Daryl Sunday night! I also am 99% sure what the outcome will be*, though I admit The Walking Dead (S3) hasn’t been as easy to second-guess as I thought it would. Such as the below spoilers, hi-lite to read, skip if you haven’t seen S3 and care about what happens being a surprise. Let’s see if I can name ten off the top of my head that made me involuntarily shout, “HOAH!”. (bullet – point spoilers for Season Three Part  begin here)

  • T-Dog,, who I was sort of concerned about but figured hey,  they wouldn’t be jerks and use the “one black guy in the group dies” cliché. Guess what? They used the “one black guy in the group dies” cliche (goddamnit)! But that zombie just came out of nowhere. One minute he’s securing the gate, next second a zombie suddenly enters the frame and CHOMP!
  • Lori dying in childbirth (especially in the same episode as T-Dog)
  • Rick finding the bloody spot where her body had been dragged off to and following it to a zombie who ate so much of her he looked like he was 9 months pregnant (maybe with really lumpy twins) including HAIR sticking out of its mouth.**
  • Rick taking a huge knife and stabbing that zombie very specifically in the zombie’s big gut, where his wife’s remains were. He looked really angry when he did it. Unless he was looking or some non-digestible item, like a necklace, that had sentimental value …or had gone completely batshit insane with grief, I had no clue he’d do it… who knows what someone would do when faced with that fucked-up set of circumstances, though?
  • How quickly and gruesomely Michonne killed the Big G’s undead little girl. Speaking of the little girl, I also inhaled sharply when he was brushing her hair and a big clump of hair, scalp, and maybe even some bone (the Foley art was really crunchy and nasty-sounding)
  • Rick suddenly burying that machete in the big Hispanic inmate’s head (in the group that they discovered in the prison). For a second, I thought they were going to shake hands, then fleetingly thought that Rick was going to punch him in the teeth, then HOAH!  Greg Nicotero said on The Talking Dead after-show that the effects department couldn’t believe  AMC didn’t give them any “notes” on censoring or toning down the scene.
  • The fact that  the prison inmate —who Rick decided not to kill personally, but toss him to be the zombies (not only escaping, but also apparently without even one zombie bite) turned out to be the guy was the one to open the gates of the prison and cause all hell to break loose as revenge
  • The zombie-head channel on 24/7 in the Big G’s “rec room” contained heads that hadn’t been put out of their misery (the comic doesn’t get that specific, I thought they were some kind of dead zombie-head trophies he liked to look at to relax) and…
  • …That one of his men was among them.

(End Spoilers for S3) There, 10 surprises off the top of my head… so to speak.

Screen shot 2013-02-07 at 7.35.53 AM

So I’m hoping to be surprised (though personally speaking, can we have just one that’s not either totally depressing or very bad news?) during the premiere. We didn’t watch the Super Bowl, but as soon as we heard about The Walking Dead commercial, we were all over that (especially the guest star, who has a ton of female fans that want to be all over him). Click the big red link below to see the commercial and the latest new promos from Part Two of Season Three!  If nothing else, check out the Super Bowl ad, which is funny whether or not you’re a fan of the show.

Watch The kick-ass  ‘Walking Dead’ Super Bowl commercial +five Fresh promos for mid-season return (Global Dispatch)

Don’t forget, “Talking Dead” has expanded to an hour, which should be cool since the 1/2 hour shows seem kind of rushed, especially the past year. Glad they’re giving it some room to breathe… and I want Greg Nicotero as a guest (bringing props used for gruesome practical effects with him as often as possible) Until then, remember to aim for the head!

Screen shot 2013-02-07 at 7.34.42 AM
*our official prediction: Daryl and Merle will, within the first minute of beating the shit out of each other (if it gets that far) mutually decide you know what? Fuck these people, and especially fuck Phillip/The Governor – Merle is feeling betrayed and pissed off after all his…what’s it been, a year? Years? What ever amount of time is was, he was fiercely loyal to the Governor, maybe even thought they were buddies, and even though Merle. is a shitty human being, probably did some things that he really didn’t want to. All he did was lie about Michonne getting away alive (oh, and killing one of his own men, though the Big G was WAY more upset Michonne returned, “killed” his daughter, and took his eye out, among other things). I think somewhere is Merle, there is a tiny pinch of humanity left in there, and he loves his brother. We know why Daryl hates the G. So after a fake-out, they both make eye contact, nod grimly, and both attack the G. and whoever his goons/security staff is. Then they’ll both be on the run back to the prison… but I don’t think the ones back at the prison are going to take too kindly to him. Especially Glen and Maggie…

**I’m curious what happened to the bones. I understand it was probably too nasty for AMC to show a pile of bones with a ragged scraps of gore clinging to them (though there could have been something suspiciously looking like a pile of bones a few yards back from where the gorged zombie, but out-of-focus), and I could even see a zombie being so hungry it just crunched up most of the bones in her arms, legs, and possibly even part of her ribcage, backbone, but zombies can’t unhinge their jaws like giant pythons (thank God, they’re enough trouble) and swallow an entire skull. Not like the zombies on this show are smart enough to use tools; he couldn’t pick up a hammer or other blunt tool/object lying around and have the knowledge to use it to pound her entire skull (or pelvis, and I’m dubious about femurs, too) into bite-size bits. Why would it want to eat bone, anyway? Suck out the marrow, eat whatever it could from the skull, maybe, but after a year, I doubt the zombie’s teeth are strong enough anyway. My friend Carol and I had a long discussion about the topic; wish I could ask Nicotero because I know he’s smart enough to come up with an explanation.
