Theatrical Trailer for “Ju-on: The Beginning of the End (Ju-on: Owari No Hajimari)” Is Creepy As Hell

So, we STILL cannot find one with English subtitles for the dialogue. If you’re a Ju-on/Grudge fan, though, you don’t really need to know the translation; it’s still scary as hell:

Sadly, we can also find no evidence that Takako Fuji is in the movie (as Kayako). We’re keeping our fingers crossed that she at least shows up in a flashback. She pops up in this quick teaser, though, which also sends chills down our spines…

What is this Ju-On “reboot”, you ask? Well, it has to be better than the Grudge 3. Anyway….  take it away, general press release:

The film was first announced at a press conference held at Akagi Shrine in Tokyo on February 26, 2014, following a spirit cleansing ceremony at the shrine. Filming began soon thereafter on March 4, 2014. Beginning of the End is set to premiere on June 28, 2014 in Japan.

Unlike the previous two installments, White Ghost and Black Ghost, this film focuses on the deceased Saeki family and its curse. An elementary school teacher named Yui (Nozomi Sasaki) visits the home of a boy named Toshio Saeki (Kai Kobayashi) who’s been absent from school for a long period of time. When she arrives, she re-lives the horrifying events that occurred in the Saeki household 10 years earlier.

Again, no evidence of Fuji-san, and they even replaced the long-time veteran actor Takashi Matsuyama, who played shitty, homicidal jealous husband, Takeo. They even used him in Grudge 3 (insert my own croaking noise here), while they re-cast Kayako for that one. OK, I can see not using the same Toshio, for the obvious reasons that the actor is human and therefore doesn’t look like a little boy anymore. But Kayako and Takeo?

OK, don’t get me started. We’re still going to see it… but if they do a stair-crawl, they better use footage of Takako Fuji from… well, there’s at least 3 to choose from.

Horror Boom’s Ten Scariest Asian Horror Movies Ever Made: #9: “Three Extremes” (2004)

Straight up: do not watch the first segment of this movie, Fruit Chan’s “Dumplings”  if you’re pregnant (this may even be a bad movie for men whose wives/girlfriends are pregnant—though there is beautiful Bai Ling to look at). In fact, if a list existed of terrible movie choices to watch when ‘expecting’, I’m pretty sure it’d be in the top 10, along with Inside. Don’t eat while you’re watching it unless you have a very strong stomach. Though if you DO decide to eat, just make sure you are not eating …dumplings.*

Here’s a scene from “Dumplings”, though it could be spoiler-ish and isn’t exactly crystal-clear quality…

There’s a clip of the disturbing final scene on You Tube, but not only will it spoil the movie, it’s not as disturbing out of context. Just watch the entire film, it’ll earn the pay off.

Don’t expect much from the Park Chan-Wook segment, which is the only piece of cinema he wrote and directed that wasn’t spellbindingly above-par. I guess even the most talented, skillful, and hard-working among us drop the ball once or twice in their careers. Most reviews—by fans and critics alike—point to “Cut” as the weakest of the three films.  The fake-out opening was great, there was a twist or two, but it became a little too torture porny-y for my tastes. I’ll have to check and see if his longtime DP collaborated with him on this one, as it didn’t have the usual beauty and composition nearly every shot of a Chan-Wook Park film has.

The Miike segment (“Box”) managed to scare me the most -and there was barely any blood. Replacing gore (though there is some disturbing imagery, it’s nothing compared to Miike’s usual bloodbaths), is a creeping dread that builds and builds until you get to a scary mental place where, if you’re not covering your eyes, you’ll want to. I’ve had to cover my eyes in two other features directed by Miike, but for different reasons. During the intense torture scenes in Imprint (the “censored segment” from Showtime’s Masters of Horror series) and Audition,**  I was covering my eyes out of squeamishness. In “Box,” I was covering my eyes because I was actively frightened of what I *might* see. Just the goddamned screen cap below from the trailer makes me feel uneasy.

*Especially ones that crunch delicately when you bite into them.

**it is worth noting that Imprint‘s torture scene is definitely harder to watch than the notorious torture scene in Audition, though the latter’s sequence did make me briefly wince and cover my eyes protectively. If there’s anyone out there that can watch Imprint and remain perfectly calm and composed inside and out through the entire running time… then I don’t think I want to meet that person at all, let alone in a dark alley.

This dark little treasure is pretty scary, but I also defy any horror fan (especially those who follow Horror Boom) to watch this without grinning at least once. This one? No cheap jump scares, sudden blasts of sound (we try to avoid those when posting short horror movies, which is why we don’t always have them up on a weekly basis). From the opening frame, you can tell that the film-makers were having a hell of a fun time with this dark, gothic fairytale while putting every ounce of care and attention to detail they had–and then some– into Suckablood. This one’s a great ride, so crank up the volume and watch it on the biggest screen you have that’ll play HD. Check it out below …after lights out, of course (it takes place at night, and is best viewed that way).* If you can’t see what lurks in the background of the featured image above (hint: they’re red and glowing),  it needs to be darker in the room!

Spoilers after the film, so watch it before you read any more.

Moral: Sometimes it’s a bad idea to frighten small children into obedience with folktales at bed-time. Nothing goes as planned for anyone involved (except the Suckablood, I guess, who seems like he’s in a pretty good mood at the end).  This is why we’re going to miss the Bloody Cuts series of short films so much! I honestly can’t pick a favorite Bloody Cuts film, if pressed, I could probably pick the top three, and this would be in there (along with Dead Man’s Lake and… shit, you know what? I don’t think I can narrow it down to three).

Suckablood was the fifth film in the Bloody Cuts series, written and directed by Ben Tillet (who also does double duty as the spot-on narrator) and Jake Hendriks. Among others, special recognition should go to Enrica Sciandrone for the atmospheric, perfect score.

The fantastic thing about the Bootleg Film Festival is the opportunity the audience (and the filmmakers!) have to chat to everyone about the films showcased. There is so much passion and talent there, it’s astounding.

As if the evening couldn’t get any better… we also received some excellent news courtesy of “Write Shoot Cut”, who announced that “Suckablood” had won TWO awards!

1.) “Suckablood” won The Golden Haggis Award, the Palme D’or of “Write Shoot Cut” – awarded to what they believe to be an exceptional short film. What an honour!

2.) “Suckablood” won The Audience Award, voted for by the people… which is amazing. Thank you!

Well, we went to the official site for Bloody Cuts and got a sinking feeling when THIS was the first video that greeted us:

So we looked and found the Bloody Cuts creators had posted this official announcement on their blog on Wednesday the 11th. We cut and pasted it; if anyone involved with Bloody Cuts isn’t comfortable with this, please drop Horror Boom a line (or even a comment; you were incredibly polite and thanked us when we did a piece on the brilliant short “Dead Man’s Lake”) and we’ll take it down and either post something else you prepared or simply a link to the blog. Anyway, here’s the announcement that gave us the blues:

A lot of hard work has gone into getting the series it is today, but it’s the support of our viewers that has really kept it going, so we want to thank you all for following, watching, sharing and enjoying our films.

But as our YouTube channel is about to break the 1 million mark, we just wanted to remind you of some of the things Bloody Cuts has achieved:

You may recall the short films that took some of the top honors in their “Who’s There” Short Horror Film Challenge… such as the Grand Prize Winner “Play Time” …and what we thought was the Scariest Horror Short of May 2014, “Lights Out”.

Oh, and this fun entry into the contest (less likely to keep you awake, but still awesome) that won Best Cinematography, “Cut”.

More news as it comes in, since the creators of Bloody Cuts are assuring everyone they have some amazing things in the works (and we believe them). Keep your eyeballs peeled here as we’ll be posting several more of their shorts (including ones related to the contest).

*Please note that our week was already ruined when we rolled out of bed Monday to be greeted first thing with the tragic news that Rik Mayall had suddenly passed, lest it sound like we’re trying to make anyone involved feel guilty; we were in a shitty mood before we read about Bloody Cuts ending. Plus, the DVD/Blu-ray of all the films did come out.

Film Review: ‘Rigor Mortis’ (2013) – Justin Chang Wasn’t Impressed, But Other Critics Were

Exactly what happened to drive Yeung Fang mad is revealed, sort of, in one of many violent flashbacks — several of which also bedevil Chin, whose suicidal impulses likely stem from his separation from his wife and son. But Mak, who seems to have interpreted the concept of “hopping vampires” as an excuse to jump between subplots as haphazardly as possible, doesn’t seem especially interested in investigating his protagonist’s psychological wounds. The director appears far more taken with the two demonic twin sisters haunting Chin’s apartment, their long, face-masking hair and bloody tendrils showing the clear influence of one of Mak’s fellow producers, J-horror maven Takashi Shimizu (“The Grudge”).

Have you ever read a pretty unenthusiastic review for a movie you were really looking forward to seeing, and find your desire to see it has only lessened by about 5%? Well, that happened for us in the case of this pretty tepid review for Juno Mak’s Rigor Mortis, which boasts an amazing trailer, clips, credentials, and set-up. We’re still going to see it (though hearing a scary movie described as ‘tedious’ usually is a buzz-kill). We maybe won’t go way out of our way to see it, just wait for the rental fee to go down (of course, we managed to miss it at SIFF, unintentionally).

You might want to check out this review at Beyond-Hollywood.com, which basically said it had the same problems but that the good outweighed the bad. So there.

Watch This REALLY Cool Sleepy Hollow (1999) Clip To Celebrate Johnny Depp’s Birthday

We were lucky to see this in the theater opening night. One of us (me) was a little too drunk to fully appreciate it, but not too drunk to scream at the top of my lungs a couple of times (once during the scene with the witch in her cave–I think that actually sobered me up some, I jumped so high). You don’t need to be a big Johnny Depp fan to appreciate this clip… just of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow–especially the Disney version, which Tim Burton said this dream sequence was a specific homage to. I sure as hell appreciate the movie now!

The  word ‘iconic’ has been almost sickeningly over-used in the last few years, especially in reference to TV and movie scenes (especially irritating to me as a writer and a movie geek when it’s something recent and not really earned iconic status yet). As in, Yes, here we have a tribute to the iconic scene in The Devil Inside where she pulls down her lower lip to reveal the upside-down cross carved into her— SHUT UP! STOP THAT! However, Ichabod Crane, the covered bridge, the flaming pumpkin… that one of the coolest fucking images I’ve carried in my memory since I watched the movie on Halloween in grade school, when they still aired it on Halloween. Scared the crap out of me and any of my friends I was watching with. Sometimes we cringed and peeked through our fingers, because we all knew it was coming…

OK, back to Johnny Depp. I recall when I read the screenplay online in 1999, knowing Depp was cast, thinking there were better choices to play Ichabod Crane, but oh well. However, he totally won me over. Below is a montage someone made of the comic relief moments in this rather dark (but really entertaining;, basically, Depp’s version of Crane fainting, being scared of spiders… actually, he makes him seem like a pussy but honestly, I wouldn’t even be brave enough to stay in town after the first creepy thing he saw.  Would you want to stick around Sleepy Hollow?

Though I wish she’d left in the horror-movie version of the witch going ‘Large Marge’ on Depp, after the big jump scare, it was hilarious. As I recall, they showed his terrified reaction, then cut to the outside of the cave and him briskly walking out of the cave, announcing, “We are leaving!” “What?” “We are leaving now!” I do recall that moment got the biggest laugh of the movie when we saw it.

La Llorona Halloween Attraction – Damn, Haunted Houses Sure Have Stepped It Up Since We Were Kids!

Apart from a few exceptions (which are vivid enough memories and such unique experiences they deserve their own post) the last I remember of going to local haunted houses, usually sponsored by a local rock radio station, you would get shuffled through a maze and some people with creepy make-up/costumes would come springing around a corner, go RAAAAWWR! or scream at you and sometimes grab you.  This is actually scary if they put some care and showmanship into it, which they did much of the time.

But this, this horrifying shit, takes it to a whole new level. I realize that this is Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights (this was taped in 2012, if they still have the attraction when we can afford an actual vacation in a couple of years, we are going, paying extra for some VIP pass if we can) and they have unlimited money and talent. Well okay, not unlimited, but the budget allows for a lot more. Not just actors, but animatronics. BIG ones.

But let’s get to the back-story of La Llorona (which translates as ‘The Weeping Woman’). I love that they based it on not just a folktale/legend, but a Latino one, and a simple one at that. No elaborate, intricate back-story, just the right amount of the basics to let your imaginations fill in the blanks. This attraction would be scary as hell without the legend, now that I think of it, but they fill you in on the basic version while you’re waiting in line or entering the maze.

I am sincerely glad I did not hear the legend of La Llarona when I was a little girl, and already had my nightmares full of stories about licked hands, dead boyfriends with signs around their necks saying YOU SHOULD HAVE OPENED THE DOOR, and hooks dangling from car doors, among many others. I didn’t need this on top of the huge terrifying library of urban legends (mostly told to me by friends at slumber parties) that were stored neatly away in my head, where they stay to this day

Well, they got THAT shit right.

I watched several taped versions and this one was the best quality (for night vision).  I hope to GOD there’s an age restriction on this. Fortunately I didn’t see anyone that looked under 18 going through the ‘maze’. Universal Studios calls it a maze –I know they have to classify all the attractions– but it looks more like a very frightening walk-through of a series of increasingly disturbing locations, including a fly blown butcher’s shop and a bridge over a body of water with the drowned corpses of children floating in it face down, and that blood-curdling bedroom with the first giant La Llorona creature – look at how long those horrible spindly arms and fingers/claws are, almost big enough to pick up the bed.

Check out the detail in the set dressing, like the very small children’s dresses hung on the wall.

If you’re curious, there’s a version in Universal Studios Florida where they took a different approach and used only (I think) live talent. You can see it below (it’s also terrifying), and there are some pretty frightening images, especially when they use the strobe light effect. The sound effects are especially haunting.

However, sorry, those giant animatronic creatures (bigger than you are, in some cases), are just complete show-stoppers for me… not that it’s a contest, they’re both effective.

There’s also behind the scenes daylight walk-throughs with the head of the production team for this attraction on You tube (Sharp Productions has a really great YT channel), and those things STILL look scary as hell. I didn’t watch more than a couple of minutes because I didn’t want to spoil the illusion. The sun is currently up, though; after it gets dark tonight,  I may change my mind.

The page linked to also mentions that “Parents often use this story to prevent their children from wandering out at night.”  Hell, they probably don’t want to wander out from under the bedcovers after their parents tell them this is a true story:

Although several variations exist, the basic story tells of a beautiful woman by the name of Maria who drowns her children in order to be with the man that she loved. The man would not have her, which devastated her. She would not take no for an answer, so she drowned herself in a river in Mexico City. Challenged at the gates of Heaven as to the whereabouts of her children, she is not permitted to enter the afterlife until she has found them. Maria is forced to wander the Earth for all eternity, searching in vain for her drowned offspring, with her constant weeping giving her the name “La Llorona.” She is trapped in between the living world and the spirit world.  Often it is said that if you lock the doors to a room with a mirror, light red candles and say her name a couple of times in front of the mirror, you may see her. [Ed: that’s okay, we’ll take your word for it]

In some versions of this tale and legend, La Llorona will kidnap wandering children who resemble her missing children, or children who disobey their parents. People who claim to have seen her say she appears at night or in the late evenings from rivers or lakes in Mexico. Some believe that those who hear the wails of La Llorona are marked for death… She is said to cry, “ay mis hijos!” “oh my children!”

‘It Follows’ Sounds Pretty Creepy – Read The Cannes Film Review On Variety.com!

As bogeymen go, Mitchell’s monster is both intuitive (like something out of a bad dream) and impossible to comprehend (despite much discussion, no one seems to know how to beat it). The pic’s malevolent shape-shifter can take the form of anyone, from a beloved relative to a complete stranger. Sometimes it’s subtle enough to blend in with crowds. At others, it’s frighteningly conspicuous: a naked old man staring at you from a nearby rooftop, or a cheerleader leaking urine as she lurches across the living-room floor. The only certainty seems to be that it won’t stop until you’re dead. And once you’re dead, it will go after the person who “gave” it to you.

Scariest Short Horror Film Of The Week – “Playtime” (Grand Prize Winner of “Who’s There” Challenge)

You remember the scariest short horror film of the entire month of May, “Lights Out,” right? Uh, yeah, we remember it pretty vividly, too. We thought it won First Prize, and “Lights Out” did win Best Director. Screen shot 2014-06-04 at 11.58.37 PM

We were surprised to find there was a Grand Prize Winner of the Bloody Cuts “Who’s There?” short film challenge that was a different film. How could anything be scarier than Lights Out? We were scared to watch “Play Time”, honestly, but it WAS still light out. It’s light out right now, which is why we are brave enough to post it. However, nice summer evening out or not, this one is fucking scary. I personally would be screaming as loud as the actress in the movie if I saw it in a movie theater, and probably more than once.  If I was the actual character, I would have soiled myself (and well before the ending).

So if you want a good old-fashioned scare, turn out the lights, turn up the volume, and switch to full-screen. Then check this out:

So… not as much of a slow burn (if you can describe any three-minute short that way) as “Lights Out”, but…yeah. Doesn’t waste much time, and we loved it.

We do recommend the below “making of” short. It’s interesting… and it might help you sleep a little better.
