Spooky-Ass Imaginary Friends: When You Were A Kid, Did YOU Know Any This Damn Scary?

Dread Central ran a great piece back in January 2014.  KW Low (DC Staff Contributor) found a collection of very creepy anecdotes on Reddit. We personally don’t spend that much time on Reddit, but we’re thinking on the basis of this Dread Central piece that maybe we should look into that, because there’s some great material to mine and pass on to readers (giving credit where credit is due, of course).

So apparently, someone–a new parent– posted a question or topic on Reddit asking if other parents had ever had any experiences with their children having creepy imaginary friends. Whenever we hear this brought up, our mind goes straight back to the time we saw the scene from the original Amityville Horror on TV when we were way too young. You know, the one with …JODY?  Jody was supposed to be a pig of some sort (we think), but all we can recall–quite vividly, even decades later–is the scene where the mother (played by Margot Kidder) looks out the window after the kid mentions something about “Jody” being outside the window and there’s a HUGE music sting as you see a red, glowing pair of eyes before they dart away. In case you don’t recall…

Anyway, there were a ton of answers that varied from “a little spooky” to “pretty creepy” to “a nightmare that sound like something out of a fucking James Wan haunted house/demonic entity movie”. As you can see, we’ve included examples…

Some are from readers who remembered things as kids,  in their own experience. This one was even written by a teacher as told from a parent:

Screen shot 2014-06-30 at 3.52.02 AM Screen shot 2014-06-30 at 4.43.13 AM

Some are childhood memories from the actual kids, grown up now (but still freaked out… understandably) :

Fuck! I might end up in therapy if I experienced something like this as an ADULT.

Fuck! I might end up in therapy if I experienced something like this as an ADULT.

We didn’t have imaginary friends as kids (that we know of, and now both of us are scared to ask our parents because we don’t want to hear anything remotely like this that’ll no doubt keep us awake). Just reading some of these in the middle of the night will probably get your imagination going a little…

Here’s the one (below) that James Wan might want to think about adapting…

Do you want to read them all? The link to the original piece on Dread Central is below:

Christ!

Christ!

Have you had enough chills or do you want some more? If you do, you’re in luck! They ran a follow-up a few weeks later with even more creepy stories, and here’s the link to that one. Some of the latter ones are actually kind of touching, such as visits (nice ones) with dead relatives who loved them.

If this particular “imaginary friend” shows up outside your kid’s window, pack some suitcases and head to a motel, then call a realtor in the morning about selling the place you just bought in Amityville.

Making MONSTER PROM – Check Out Joshua Hoffine’s Latest Groovy Photo Project

One our favorite photographers (and possibly out favorite horror photographer) Josh Hoffine worked on a really fun new project last month — and the results are, as always, amazing. Check out all the photos, including behind-the-scenes work and “prom photos”; in some of the latter you have to look a little harder than others to look for the tip-off as to what makes the prom-goer not quite human (hint: hands and feet). Now we’re off to look into his first short film, “Black Lullaby” …or maybe we’ll wait till it’s light out.

Joshua Hoffine | Behind The Scenes

Hi kiddies!  This is my new project MONSTER PROM.

001 (2)

This project was a commission from Sony UK utilizing their new full-frame Sony A7 camera.  I re-imagined iconic monsters Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman as teenagers posing for their Prom photos.

Virtually all Americans are familiar with the classic Prom photo.  We’ve all seen them, and most of us have even posed for them.  I love Prom photos.  Nothing captures the quintessential awkwardness of adolescence like the Prom photo.  It is the final game of dress-up before entering the adult world.

Monsters are the perennial outsider.  Did any of us ever feel more like monsters than we did as teenagers?  Bodies changing beyond our control, sprouting hair, developing acne, braces, bad haircuts.  The self-consciousness of adolescence comes with the realization that the villagers could turn on you at any moment.

There is a long-standing tradition of teenage monsters in the Horror genre…

Find Out If “There Are Monsters” (2008), In Horror Boom’s Scariest Short Horror Film Of The Week

“Honey… it’s happening.”
“What’s happening?”

We may say this quite a bit lately, but here’s another creepy-ass horror short that we found both scary and impressive enough to be a pick of the week in which the less you know going in, the better. This one, written and directed by Jay Dahl, will raise the hairs on the back of your neck even in daylight… in fact, some disturbing shit that goes down in the movie itself happens during daylight. Take a look and find out for yourself…

So, as to the question we posed in the subject line? Yeah, we’re pretty sure that…

HEY! Ten American Horror Story Freak Show Plot/Character Details That Have Recently Hit The News!

OK, we’re going to go with bullet points.  If last season’s “Coven” wasn’t exactly your favorite season (ahem), things may be looking up.

Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 9.17.52 AM

Ryan Murphy has said that he wanted a “comedic tone” similar to Coven, but that this season is just getting darker, and it’s going to not be so much in the tone of Coven, but closer to the tone of Asylum! Hey, nightmare time from AHS again!

  • Let’s get the bad news out of the way now: There is a 99% chance that Lilly Rabe will not be able to join the cast, as she has a scheduling conflict. Let’s cross our fingers she can at least show up for a cameo.
  • Vic Mackey Michael Chiklis will be playing the circus/freak show strongman (that’s pretty much how they looked back in the day, built like bulldogs rather than beefcake).
  • His character will be married to Angela Bassett’s character. Ryan Murphy described the character as the strong but sensitive type, who “is written to be quite vulnerable”.
  • Kathy Bates will play his ex-wife, and they’ll all have plenty of scenes together… which is great, since Bassett VS. Bates = pure gold. Chiklis will just be the icing on the cake!
  • Sarah Paulson will not be playing a character with two heads, but one with a conjoined twin. If you’ve seen photos of people born with a live, conjoined twin, this has the high possibility to become really, really disturbing.*
  • Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 9.16.34 AM

American Horror Story Freakshow Horror poster design by Mental Shed Studios. Horror Boom does not own the copyright.

  • The production will start shooting S4 in the middle of July. Kathy Bates says she’s starting to have costume fittings, and her character will appear in the portions of the show that take place in the late 1950s.
  • In a recent E! Online Spoiler chat, we found out about three new characters currently being cast: “that of the comedic ‘Larry’, ‘Bobby’, an extremely, extremely tall man described as a gentle giant,  and ‘Sammy’, a role which will require prosthetics.” Yikes…
  • Evan Peters will be playing an as-yet unspecified ‘freak’, whom Jessica Lange’s character has ‘rescued’. Oh, and her character refers to them as “unusuals”,  since let’s face it, no-one likes to be called a freak (even if they are employed in a Freak Show).
  • Denis O’Hare will return as “a collector of freaks,” according to Vulture. Of his relationship with Lange’s character, he hinted, “We’ll have lots of scenes with each other, but we’ll be battling.” We’re really glad he’s going to play a live character with a tongue this time around.
  • Actors that are definitely “in”, but don’t have specified roles as of yet: Frances Conroy (yes!), Emma Roberts, Jamie Brewer, and Gabourey Sidibe.
  • Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 8.51.59 AM

It’s “unusual” that Angela Bassett appears to be aging in reverse!

We have been told that the “big bad”- -glad they have one this season– will be someone (or something) called “The Clown Killer”. What we don’t know yet is if he is a clown that kills people, a killer who targets clowns, or possible a clown who only kills other clowns.

From the Paleyfeat 2014 panel.

*When I was young, I want to say…pffft…maybe 5th grade, my parents let me check out a book from the library titled “Freaks” that was in fact very sympathetic and compassionate. A little too informative for me at that particular age, though. I read about a man (who did work in a freak show) with a conjoined twin that had a head and an arm that hung there limply. The head would sometimes go to sleep and wake up, and it snored. The final sentence has been seared into my brain for decades: “When the head began talking, however, he committed suicide with a shotgun.”  I assumed back then (and still have the strong feeling) that it wasn’t the fact that the head was talking that drove him to kill himself but what the head was saying.

‘American Horror Story Freak Show’ Twins Hoax: Sarah Paulson Admits To Fake Photo

This news is actually kind of a relief… the Twit-pic looked too goofy.

Oh, and sorry about the in-your-face giant font in this and the previous AHS Freak Show piece. It’s a re-blog, so I couldn’t change anything in it.

HollywoodLife

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ fans — your thoughts on Bette and Dot are all wrong! Sarah Paulson just admitted that the two-headed character she revealed on Twitter on June 12 is NOT what you will actually see on the next season of the hit TV show.

Things aren’t always what they seem. American Horror Story: Freak Show doesn’t begin filming until July, but fan favorite Sarah Paulson already released what fans THOUGHT was the first image of her character next season, the two-headed Bette and Dot. In a shocking twist, Sarah says it wasn’t the real deal!

New Details About ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’- Such As A Clown Killer … And More

We actually seriously considered starting an online petition for AHS Freakshow to bring back Naomi Grossman as Pepper. Timing seems like it could work in the time period Murphy set that parallels the modern story. We’re also VERY relived to hear that the season is “turning out darker than planned”. Michael Chiklis as the murderous clown? Maybe. We’ll keep you posted on all the details!

This new season has potential to become really disturbing.

Happy Birthday, Bruce Campbell -And Many More (Plus, Check These Clips Out)!

So it’s after midnight, we’re a little late on his birthday, but it’s never too late for someone this groovy.

Screen shot 2014-06-23 at 6.04.01 AM

The person who posted the upcoming featured compilation on You Tube wanted to make it VERY CLEAR that they did not put the compilation together, nor do they own it, they made a copy and posted it because the original was taken down. Or something. I watch enough footage of Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness (for one) and I get kind of cloudy and foggy. I’m not going to rhapsodize about the 20-year long crush on him (which is cooling down now, but he’s still charming as hell) but I will say that the time I spent talking with him (in 1993 and 2001; the first time was just me trying to make words that formed recognizable sentences, but I watched him sign autographs in costume as Brisco County for literally six hours) I got the very clear feeling that he has absolutely no ego at all. I’ve met many celebrities, including actors, comedians, and rock stars. Groovy Bruce was one of the very few that didn’t act, even to the slightest degree, that he was doing you a favor by letting you spend time talking to you*  For instance, when I thanked him for staying hours past closing at a book signing to make sure everyone got their book signed, hand shook, photo took with him ,etc. he responded that he was the one that should be grateful for the support, and was totally genuine**.

Plus, as you may have noticed, he’s really entertaining.

As you may know, he was supposed to star in “Crime Wave” AKA “The XYZ Murders,” but the studio didn’t want him as the lead, they wanted someone more established (even though a watch of the movie will show you he was ten times the charisma of the actor they did pick as the lead). So Raimi, Tappart, and Bruce wrote a part for him as “Renaldo the Heel,” which he’s so perfect in it’s almost worth having him play a smaller role. Yeah, I know it’s not even close to a horror movie, but fuck it, this is Bruce Campbell here, he earned it (I was going to go for his scenes in Waxwork 2, but failed to locate them anywhere but our personal copy on VHS). Check out a pretty young Campbell in all his scenes below.

Happy Birthday again to Bruce–you’ve made a lot of horror fans, especially female ones, very, VERY happy!

*If I name the other ones, I’m going to sound like I’m name-dropping, and if I tell you which ones were such arrogant douches that I lost respect for them I’m going to sound bitter and negative. But hey, if you want to ask…

**When I was getting up to walk away and out of the store he playfully asked, “Why are you leaving so fast, baby?” This took serious, serious self-control (and the fact I’m married) to just smile at him over my shoulder and walk away from. I’m still surprised I made it all the way to the car with my legs working; took a few minutes to “collect myself” before I could drive, though.

DON’T MOVE (2013), Scariest Short Horror Film of the Week- Another Award-Winning Masterpiece From Bloody Cuts!

This is the eighth and final short film in the series from Bloody Cuts (unless you count the example short they made for the “Who’s There” contest, which we’ll also be posting), and while it’s too bad it’s the last, it’s certainly an excellent one to finish out the series with. This is more fun the less you know going in, but I should note it is definitely gory enough to not be suitable for kids.  Crank the sound on this one, and not just because it’s scarier that way, but because of the amazing sound/foley art (worth an award right there). The same goes for the visuals- anything less than HD and you’ll be missing out on some amazing effects.

Just to give you an idea of how much work (and blood) was put into Don’t Move, it features the biggest cast, the most deaths, the heaviest visual FX and the largest crew to date; over thirty people came together to make the bloodiest & tensest cut yet. Oh, and the Don’t Move shoot was so messy that fake carpet had to be laid down… and director Anthony Melton was forced to spend Monday morning cleaning blood off the walls. (Source: Bloody Cuts UK)

So what are you waiting for (other than daylight)?

Now THAT is how you fucking end a gory short horror film. BOOM! We’re not surprised that the director’s favorite horror film is Hellraiser (I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that visual will be leaving my head for weeks months).  If you want to know about Don’t Move, we’ve got plenty of goodies for you. Read on!

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.45.11 AM

Here is what Bloody Cuts UK officially has to say about “Don’t Move” (on their website):

‘Don’t Move’ represents the directorial début of Bloody Cuts producer Anthony Melton, and his love of horror classics such as Hellraiser ensured ‘Don’t Move’ has become a tense, disturbing and brutally bloody short.

Developed as a challenge to create a horror script with little movement and hardly any dialogue, ‘Don’t Move’ crawled out of writer David Scullion’s twisted brain in 2010, where he promptly left it on a shelf to gather dust. When producer Ben Franklin discovered it in a basement two years later, Bloody Cuts quickly realized they had found their Episode 8.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.46.08 AM

Funded by the fantastic generosity of Horror-lovers all over the globe, the month-long Kickstarter campaign for ‘Don’t Move’ raised over £3000 and ensured Anthony’s ambitious vision was able to be realized… in spectacular fashion.

‘Don’t Move’ once again uses the special effects make-up talents of Neill Gorton’s Millennium FX (Doctor Who), who continue to bring their fresh and terrifying creations to life, and stars an excellent cast that includes Rachel Bright, Ian Whyte (Game of Thrones, Prometheus) and Jake Hendricks (Hollyoaks).

Incidentally, director / producer Anthony Melton’s favourite horror film is Hellraiser and the demonic entity in ‘Don’t Move’ was designed & created by industry-legend Cliff Wallace… who actually worked on the original Hellraiser! An absolute honour.

Trivia: the voice of ‘Paul’ at the beginning of ‘Don’t Move’ isn’t actually voiced by actor Martin Skipper. This was added later by Ben Tillett, who is also the director, writer and ‘Narrator’ of https://horrorboom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpSuckablood… did you spot the Phantom in the opening Steadicam Shot? [Ed. note: we still haven’t. Did you any of you guys?]

Here we have is the “making of” video;  highly recommended watching… they worked their ASSES off on this one (and there’s less CGI than I thought).

I’m surprised they managed to shoot it over one weekend, I mean got-damn, it’s pretty elaborate.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.50.00 AM

Here’s something we thought was really cool. There’s a WordPress blog called Write-Shoot-Cut, and this page features an introduction by Neil Rolland (who got to see Don’t Move on the big screen as part of a special showcase event at the Bootleg Film Festival, Edinburgh) and a piece by the screenwriter of Don’t Move, David Scullion. He rightly points out that the script is ridiculously tame compared to the final product (but don’t let that stop you from reading it). Our personal favorite extra goodie we found is the actual script, a 12-page .PDF file that you can download on the page; here’s the link again.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.47.05 AM

Here’s the Kickstarter campaign page for Don’t Move, which also makes for interesting reading …and watching. There’s a cool video “pitch” which I can’t embed, so check it out on Kickstarter. I’m suddenly VERY bummed all over again that Bloody Cuts will not be continuing in its current form.

Finally, the usual awesome poster…
