Ever heard that bad things happen in threes? Well, so do good things, and this proves it. Unless, of course, you hate giant spider movies, in which case you’re probably on the wrong web address.
First up is Spiders 3D. We were excited when we heard about it! Giant spiders in 3D. Sounds good to us. A little too much CGI, but hey, it’s a giant spider movie. We dig Christa Campbell. Plus it has an ex-Melrose Place star in it, Patrick Muldoon (who was also in Ice Spiders …and Starship Troopers, now that I think of it, way higher production values, but still, it had giant bugs). Plus there was this trailer:
And this synopsis (like we need one, but no complaints here): SPIDERS centers on mutant spiders that fall to earth from a disabled Soviet space station. With New York City threatened to be overrun, it’s up to transit supervisor Jason Cole and health inspector Rachel Cole to save their daughter and prevent the colossal Queen Spider from uniting with her eggs and creating an army of massive killer spiders.
We got sort of nervous when we found out it was PG-13, but still had hopes. Now we’ve heard mixed things. One review, which of course is now nowhere to be found to link to, had the main complaint that the spiders don’t show up till past the halfway mark, and the PG-13 rating means there’s little spider carnage, or that it takes place off-screen. I don’t think most people who deliberately go see a giant spider movie want a slow burn.
Also, there’s a lot of reviews like this from fellow giant monster movie fans.
Here’s a link to Dread Central’s review (recommended). We think we’re going to wait till Big Ass Spider to spend money on a ticket. Spiders 3D (filmed in 3D, not converted later) also is just doing a limited theatrical release that began on February 8th, then it comes out on DVD/VOD March 12th. That’s another problem, it’s not going to be in 3D for lots of viewers, since the technology at this time for a home 3D set-up ain’t exactly cheap.
What’s Big Ass Spider, you ask? Watch this space, Part 2 of out Giant Spider Movie Round-Up is coming soon!
