Must See: Popcornhorror.com’s Voting Deadline For Your Favorite “Blood Games” Horror Short is April 30th!

We discovered this site today (of course, at the last minute, but it’s still not too late).

popcornhorrorlogo.png

We’ll try to (for now) give you the Cliff Notes version, with more to come. You can also just read the “About Us” section on PopcornHorror.com, but if you’re in a hurry:

Most of the staff either grew up in the 80s like us, or are younger but very well-informed and huge 80s horror fans. You just need to look at their’ favorites’ list under bios.

  • Popcornhorror.com is based out of Scotland, started in 2011, and is a website and an app (we do still recommend, when you’re watching the short films,  that you watch them on a laptop rather than a tiny screen the size of an index card, though).
  • Popcornhorror was made –does this sound familiar?– BY horror fans, FOR horror fans. And we know us horror fans always have the coolest shit, right?
  • They want to help out and encourage all short horror filmmakers, or aspiring ones, to send in their work and get it out there (but they don’t own the rights if they decide to post your submitted film). There’s more of that on the FAQ Page.
  • What’s not to love about all the above?

Anyway, since the clock is ticking, we highly encourage you to click here ASAP to check out six quality horror shorts that are the finalists for a contest they ran called “Blood Games.” The theme was basically, well, like it sounds. For the six finalists the tagline could either be It Started Off As A Game…  or  It Was Just Supposed To Be a Fun Game… or Some Games Should Never Be Played.  I believe the longest was ten minutes, another was a little over four, another two minutes.

From the nail-biting horror short finalist “Click”

We didn’t feel at all like we were wasting out time after watching any of them. One of the finalists is well-made but didn’t stand out, another contender reminded me of a different, better short I saw on BloodyCuts.uk  last year that blew me out of the water,  another only has one word of dialogue yet definitely gets the message across, but all six of the finalists are better than most horror shorts you’ll watch.  One has a twist ending that I’ll bet… hell, I’ll bet our Park Chan-Wook Vengeance Trilogy Boxed Set on that you will NEVER see coming. I pride myself (and get on my own nerves) by almost never being surprised by a twist, it’s pretty rare when I see something I absolutely couldn’t even begin to second-guess. No, I’m not going to tell you which ones are which, go in clean–and not trying to figure out the twist–and find out yourself. It’s much more fun that way!

If you’re short on time and can watch only two, I’d recommend “Click” (for successfully using a simple, very chilling element to scare the hell out of you, while staying understated; I don’t think there’s one drop of blood spilled) and the recently released “Don’t Move” from our horror pals across the pond at Bloody Cuts. Now THAT one is full of gore and sleep-with-the-lights-on scary. Though the budget was very low, you would never, ever guess it from watching. Crank the sound– not so much for the jumps but the amazing stunning, crisp, and terrifying audio. You won’t see (nor have you seen) anything like it. “Don’t Move” is also currently the top vote-getter.

Those are the two that stick in my mind–the chills and suspense in the simple (but very clever) terror of “Click” (that title is in no way internet-related), and the in-your-face horror show that is “Don’t Move,” with the kind of quality you’d expect from Bloody Cuts at the top of their game. Voting closes April 30th (I assume at midnight) so get in those votes for your favorite and most deserving of the prize package now!

Nope, I do NOT mind waiting for the fresh popcorn.

Guillermo del Toro brings 'Monster' to HBO

Reblogged from Inside TV:

Guillermo del Toro has closed a deal to adapt the Manga series titled "Monster" for HBO.

Written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa for Shogakukan Inc., the award-winning "Monster" series begins with a brilliant young doctor whose choice to save a dying 12-year-old boy unwittingly unleashes a pandora's box that leaves him battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.

The young adult series first began in 1995 in Japan but it took another decade or so before it was translated for distribution in the U.S.

Well well well!  This should be an interesting mix. Looks like HBO is probably getting something in line in case True Blood ends up not being renewed for a 2014 season (shudder). Hopefully not; and we're excited to see what del Toro's vision will bring. Let's just hope he doesn't hold back! If you'd like more info, the Deadline.com piece that broke the story can be found by clicking here. Enjoy! Guillermo del Toro

The Lords of Salem Review – UK DVD Version (Dread Central)

Well, this is unfortunate. We’ll give you our two cents after the Dread Central review.

Click on the big red link below to check out what they had to say. Hint: it probably won’t make you run out and see/rent the movie.

Lords of Salem, The (UK DVD) Review – Dread Central.

Disclaimer :we haven’t seen The Lords of Salem, but have read many, many reviews similar to this-and have seen everything else Zombie has made, even The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. We almost bought a copy of The Devil’s Rejects–and the original House of 1000 Corpses screenplay, which Zombie should have stuck with*. We’re considering checking out Rob Zombie’s tie-in novel of The Lords of Salem, ( written with B.K.Evenson), or at least an e-book sample.

Pretty sure this was one of the drawings of production art included in the screenplay for House of 1000 Corpses we have– rented the movie for that alone.

At this point, anyway, Zombie doesn’t have the skills needed to write and direct a satisfying genre movie.  He’s got potential, and a great eye for detail. He needs a collaborator to tell him when to stop, to cut something out, and tell him when an entire act needs a rewrite. Writing likeable characters would be nice, too. Other reviewers and fans besides me have stated they’re getting tired of watching horrible white trash families, usually with drug or alcohol problems, scream at each other (and we’re not talking about The Devil’s Rejects, that family got along fine, within itself, they just were vicious and sadistic to innocent victims). He clearly has the drive, and his heart’s in the right place. His directing is fine, his premises are usually great, but his screenplays need help. Unfortunately, he’s going to needs to figure this out on his own (I can’t see Rob Zombie co-operating with some intervention). We just hope he never gives up before he does find a good partner or collaborator.

We're usually happy to cut Zombie slack simply for coming up with THIS.

The Lords of Salem theatrical release date is April 19th, 2013; not sure if it’s limited or they’re going the Halloween/Halloween 2 route and doing a wide release.

*the coolest thing in the copy of the screenplay we have are half a dozen drawings by Zombie of the sets, plus some really awesome production art — there’s a REALLY cool one of the gas station/fried chicken-joint/sideshow/haunted thrill-ride Sid Haig‘s character runs.  Actually, that place was the coolest thing in the movie, too.

(Spoilers) The Walking Dead: Dallas Roberts Gives A Great Interview on ‘Milton’s Twisted Fate’ (Entertainably.com)

You don’t want to miss this interview with Dallas Roberts from Entertainably.com by Lesley Goldberg, unless you’re so pissed off at the shitty season finale that or the way Laurie Holden had the rug pulled out from under her that you want nothing to do with the show until you calm down. Actually, if so, you wouldn’t have bothered to read this far, so check it out below!

‘Walking Dead’ Postmortem: Dallas Roberts on Milton’s Twisted Fate | Entertainably.

There’s also some great links (though because of a technical difficulty on someone’s part, the introduction is one big hyperlink to a blank Pinterest page, so ignore that link). A few points of interest in the Lesley Goldberg interview:

  • After the original shoot (read about the gruesome version of the ending you didn’t see here), Roberts and Holden were called back to re-shoot (what we assume was the aired version) two months later.
  • In fact, the scene was re-written a few times.
  • He wonders if it was Mazarra’s idea to have Andrea killed off (though signs point to Kirkman making the call)
  • First, it was a wrench that Milton left on the floor for Andrea to grab rather than the pair of pliers, and Milton was going to be shot in the stomach rather than stabbed
  • He didn’t get a “death dinner” like Holden did, but he’s cool with it and understands (he ‘basically just existed in Woodbury’)

Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but we get the feeling that the interview was curious about the decision to re-shoot the scene… the day the episode started (re)shooting was the day she found out about Andrea’s death, Holden says. Okay, you might have noticed a pattern in several of the last few pieces covering the finale; we think it was a rotten (so to speak) way to treat a cast member. Kirkman has said (almost verbatim) that in Season 4 we’ll understand why it was important to the plot/character arcs to come to kill her off.* We’ve “Pressed” other blog entries and articles written by others (mainly fans of the comic, like we are) such as this one here that we strongly agree with. So unless we find out new information, we’re going to do our best to stop bitching about it repeatedly. Update: Whoop! we just found one on EW.com on ‘the ending you didn’t see’, and those are always worth “Pressing” on to you guys.

Clearly, this was before the re-shoot--his glasses are on and he looks more like he'd been dead for days, not minutes (good choice to make the transformation more subtle and scary)

*Then again, he also boasted the finale would give total closure to the prison arc; sorry, but we call bullshit on that. Ugh, that episode wasn’t finale material, maybe the only really interesting thing was Carl finally saying what he REALLY thinks to Rick, and seeing the way he carelessly tossed his father’s sheriff’s badge at his feet.

The Good, The Bad and The Worse: The Walking Dead Finale

Reblogged from sarah on the go!:

Welcome to the Tombs

Milton turning into a walker was fantastic. The opening scene, panning from the one eye of evil and setting up a scenario straight out of hell was even better. The rest of last night's finale episode of The Walking Dead was underwhelming.

We had been given so much build up for a prison war for the better half of season three, then the Governor and his gang roll up to an empty house.

Yep. Sarah hit about every point I wanted to make in my list of reasons why the finale felt unfinished. Robert Kirkman also promised "the whole prison story arc will be resolved, we'll see closure as it's time to move on." Really? I know Kirkman isn't going to give out spoilers and not even get anywhere near them, but that was just insulting. Rumor is that he's the one that made an 11th-hour change to the script to kill off Andrea, which lead to conflict with Glenn Mazzara, which lead to him getting pissed off enough to part ways with the show. Or, he could have gotten the rug yanked out from under him just like Laurie Holden did. Again, major props to her talent for keeping the character likeable (to us, anyway) and being gracious about her exit, even though it was a shitty situation.

"Your reasoning was bullshit before. 'Everyone you care about dies?' Get in line. Who can't say that? So we just resign ourselves to be miserable? I've lost people, we all have. We would just see whose curse is stronger, if mine kills you before yours kills me. We're all going to die, Rick...that was true before the turn. I guess what I'm trying to say is...I'm glad you decided to stop being such a pussy. Tomorrow is a new day--and for the first time in a long time, I'm actually looking forward to it. So thanks."

This Just In- AMC Releases Pics/Video Of Alternate, Gorier Final Milton VS. Andrea Scene From The Walking Dead Season Three Finale (SPOILERS)

Spoiler Alert If You Have Not Seen Welcome TO The Tombs, AKA The Walking Dead Season Three Finale Yet And Plan To …Last Warning!

No, Dude, Seriously! Just stay off the internet unless it’s an emergency until you watch the episode; it’s not only here but plastered everywhere online!

This alternate version would have been too brutal and taken away the suspense in the last act of “Welcome To The Tombs.” We agree they went the right way, since the reveal was much more effective. Not thrilled that it happened, but the suspense of not knowing Andrea‘s fate until Rick, Michonne, Tyreese and Daryl did was one of the few things the finale did right. Who would have killed Milton? Would she still have been able to take herself out? Maybe they would have integrated it with a scene of the rescue team kicking the door open exactly a split-second too late, then have been greeted with the sight you see in the “featured image” above, quickly blew his brains out, and held Andrea as she died? That would have taken away her kill, not to mention– OK, let’s back up a little…

Here’s the link to the Comicbook.com blog that first caught our eye about the alternate ending.

Below are a sample or two;  AMC owns all the copyrights. Click on the below photo (or use this link) to go to the AMC featurette that spills the info in the first place…  and this writer actually felt very unsettled after watching this particular “Inside the Episode” –for one, Andrea’s raw, primal scream of pain and terror caused hairs on the back of my neck to rise in a chill– so for what it’s worth…  heads up.

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 3.40.39 AM

Oh, and about the photos, two things: First, EEK, that doesn’t look like her neck he’s biting into (though maybe the Andrea-haters would have loved to see it) and wouldn’t he go for the exposed part of her neck instead of deciding to start by gnawing his way through what looks to be a leather coat? You don’t see Walkers bite through clothing very much. In fact, I can’t remember a time when they bit something other than exposed flesh. Also, Milton lost his glasses before he even got stabbed. What, did he turn and then feel around, find his glasses, and put them back on?  In the on-air version, the glasses weren’t even there when the episode began.

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 4.12.26 AM

The more we think about it, the more we realize what a shitty version of the scene this would have been. Terrible idea. Wonder who made the call on using the more suspenseful, subtle version? Good call, whoever you are.

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 4.14.15 AM

Fuck!

Another great reason to go the less in-your-face route: how did he decompose so fast in literally less than 3 minutes? I know poor Milton bled out, but come on–do someone’s teeth go from white and healthy to yellow and rotted-looking the instant they turn? Yes, it is more showy, but so distractingly inconsistent with others that turned to walkers so fast we would have been pulled  at least some viewers out of the episode (not that we were super-invested in the first place). Merle got rotten really fast too, but the scene was so emotional and perfectly acted we forgave it.  The zombie-fied version we saw of Milton in the aired version was actually much scarier, and more subtle, and we could focus on the scene (though I feel bad for Dallas Roberts having to go through the 3-4 hours in the make-up chair–including those contacts– to have no-one see the result anywhere but in a “behind the scenes” feature).

I know how the safety works.
Well, I’m not going anywhere.
I tried.
You did …you did.

Do you think they picked the right version to air? Feel free to sound off…

‘The Walking Dead’: Andrea (SPOILER REMOVED)— Laurie Holden Talks Season 3 Finale – TVLine

There are certain parts of this interview that have started a rumor. AND THIS IS ALREADY A RUMOR, WE ARE ONLY REPEATING IT BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY STARTED OUT AS A THEORY.  The LAST thing we want is for Horror Boom to become some horror gossip rag.

‘The Walking Dead’: Andrea Dies — Laurie Holden Talks Season 3 Finale – TVLine.

Someone intelligent posted it to the AV Club Walking Dead message board after the review, and after reading it, we …well… would not be totally shocked if it turned out to be true. All we’ll say is, refer to the parts where the fate of her character was changed at the last minute. It’s easy to read between the lines from there. We hope, however, that it did NOT in fact go down that way. Either way, Laurie Holden and Andrea will be missed.

‘The Walking Dead’: Andrea, Milton Discuss The Season Three Finale Shocker (SPOILERS)!

“Do I wish we could’ve seen and explored more of the comic-book-Robert-Kirkman Andrea? Yes. Absolutely,” Holden told TVLine. “Do I wish that I had more scenes with Michonne, showing that friendship? Yes. Absolutely. But at the end of the day, I don’t think I could ask for a better death. I feel like her life mattered, and she died trying, and her heart was in the right place. I feel grateful for that. You can’t have it all.”
